The border region between the United States and Mexico exists as both a physical space and an ideological construct. This seminar uses literary and filmic narratives to explore issues of identity, opportunity, and violence that arise from this contested space. How does the border shape individual and cultural identities? In what ways does the border create opportunities for both advancement and exploitation? How do these works engage conflicts and tensions of race, nationalism, gender, and power? The course will include writers and filmmakers from both countries, and we will read original texts both in Spanish and English. This course satisfies the Area 2 requirement for the Spanish major. From the sixteenth century to the twenty-first century, the Amazon rainforest has been a source of wonderment, greed, and, in our present, concern. However, as exemplified by metaphors such as “el Dorado”, the “Green Hell” or the “Lungs of the Earth”, the Amazon is as much a geographical space as it is a discursive formation. This course offers an introduction to the cultural representations of the Amazon rainforest. From Indigenous myths to contemporary films and first-person accounts, we will analyze how the Amazon has been imagined and depicted by multiple actors, such as indigenous activists, scientists, filmmakers, and entrepreneurs. Through a variety of texts, disciplines, and voices, we will analyze how the Amazon has been narrated as a place of “origin”, “wealth”, “suffering”, and “resistance”. While students will gain a general understanding of Amazonian culture, one of the objectives of the course is to discuss how indigenous peoples are tapping into their ancestral knowledge to situate themselves as global political actors and fight back against environmental degradation. Medieval and early modern Iberia, together with colonial America, were multilingual, multicultural, and multiracial worlds marked by discrimination and by acts of imagining difference, much like our own. The Spanish word raza (“race”) was once used to describe the quality of cloth. In this course, we will unweave the invisible cloth of race by traveling from thirteenth-century Castile to seventeenth-century Mexico. Through readings of epic poems, exempla, travelogues, novelas moriscas, and comedias, along with grammatical treatises and legal documents, we will explore how premodern societies constructed and codified human difference. What constituted raza when the concept of race had not yet crystallized as we understand it today? How were Muslims, Berbers, Jews, Indigenous Americans, and Black people perceived—and gradually racialized—across the centuries? Ultimately, how might these texts and histories help us cultivate alternative ways of imagining both the past and the present? This course satisfies the Area 1 requirement of the Spanish major. Approximately 40,000 foreign volunteers traveled to Spain during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) to fight against fascism, show their support for the democratically elected Republican government, and usher in a workers’ revolution. The majority of these volunteers joined the International Brigade as soldiers, but many others served as healthcare professionals, engineers, and journalists. On the other side of the political spectrum, roughly 70,000 Italian troops and 16,000 German troops provided vital support for the so-called Nationalists who, on July 18, 1936, had staged a military coup against the Republicans in the name of God and against communism. Most notorious among them is the Condor Legion, the Nazi air force unit responsible for the bombing of the Basque city of Gernika that inspired Pablo Picasso’s eponymous painting.Against this historical backdrop, “For God or Revolution” focuses on the rich mosaic of experiences recorded in letters, diaries, documentaries, films, photographs, and fiction by non-Spaniards who fought in opposing camps of the conflict. Alongside prominent names (Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, André Malraux, or Robert Capa), less known female figures merit equal recognition: among others, army captain Mika Etchebéhère, photojournalist Gerda Taro, nurses Nan Green and Salaria Kea, and novelist Muril Rukeyser. The conflicting testimonies of these men and women highlight the sacrifices they made in pursuit of their ideals, while at the same time reminding us of the complexity of the human condition in times of war. This course is designed for heritage learners of Spanish: those who grew up speaking Spanish at home, with extended families and in their communities. These students are comfortable speaking Spanish, but their literacy in it was not necessarily developed by formal schooling. Leaning on all of their previous experience with the language, the course seeks to enrich and complement the students' linguistic repertoire by further developing their communicative abilities, both verbal and written, especially in an academic context. Class content will focus on Latin America and the U.S. Latinx population. Students will gain increased confidence in the language and will strengthen their identity as bilinguals and abilities to interact with a more diverse group of speakers, pursue higher-level courses and/or apply this knowledge in their professional endeavors, inside or outside the United States. This course is the equivalent to SPAN 305 for those interested in the Spanish major or minor. (Students cannot earn credit for both 305 and 306). Regardless of the career path chosen, today's college graduates will likely use Spanish in their professions. If they can function in Spanish in the workplace in all four modalities (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and they have the cultural sensitivity to fulfill their responsibilities properly, they will have more professional choices and experiences. In this course students will acquire the knowledge of Spanish for use in the workplace, as well as insights into the cultures, traditions, values and practices related to the bilingual workplace in the US and abroad. Don Quijote as Timeless Text immerses students in the universe of Miguel de Cervantes’ immortal novel, published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. Through critical analyses of each and every chapter, the course will highlight the significance of an emblematic work of fiction which transcends cultural boundaries. Class format will combine explanations by the professor with group or individual presentations. Rather than aim at specific goals, we will travel through the pages of the novel much like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza ride across the region of La Mancha: at random, with no specific destination, always in search of adventures that may come when least expected. While Don Quijote has remained at the center of the Spanish canon for more than 400 years, it is also, and perhaps essentially, a piece of entertainment in the highest sense of the word. Let us enjoy the text without limitations, keeping in mind that reading for pleasure is a hallmark of our human condition. This course satisfies the Area 1 requirement for the Spanish major. Often portrayed as the nation’s white heartland, the American Midwest is far more diverse than its popular image suggests. Latine histories in the region date back to the late nineteenth century, when workers labored in the cattle and railroad industries; by the twentieth century, migrant laborers had become vital to the Heartland’s agricultural, meatpacking, and railroad economies. In recent decades, the Latine population has grown from 1.3 million in 1980 to 6 million in 2020, shaping the cultural, social, and economic fabric of both rural towns and major Midwestern cities. This course draws on the frameworks of transnational migration and placemaking to provide a critical examination of Latin American migration to the Midwest. Combining insights from the social sciences and the humanities, we will explore how immigrants create home, build community, and articulate Latinidad in spaces often imagined as culturally homogeneous. Through literature, film, and scholarly works, the course foregrounds the voices of immigrants and their descendants as they navigate displacement, cultural negotiation, and the ongoing work of placemaking in a region marked by both exclusion and renewal. While we analyze how immigration policies and social structures shape these experiences, we will pay particular attention to stories, cultural practices, and public performances through which Latine communities claim visibility and agency. A community engagement component deepens our understanding. In partnering with local organizations such as El Colegio, Centro, CLUES, and COPAL MN, students will connect course readings to the lived realities of Latine immigrants, learning not only from texts but from direct participation in cultural and community initiatives across the Twin Cities. Engagement with the International Festival of Minnesota allows students to study the ethnic diversity within the Latine community in the Twin Cities, whether recently arrived or long established, and how they construct their ethnic identity through performance for the larger society.

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of contemporary filmmaking in Abya Yala, a term that reclaims the Indigenous identities and knowledges of the territories known as the Americas. Through an examination of 21st century feature films and documentaries, we will discuss how both Indigenous and non-Indigenous directors use cinema to portray the history of colonial violence, its lasting legacies, and the ongoing struggle for indigenous sovereignty in Abya Yala/Latin America. Recognizing the ethical complexities inherent in filmmaking, in this course we will critically analyze the representation of Indigenous identities, collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous creators, and the rise of Indigenous-led film production. Along with film screenings and in-class discussions, students will elaborate a video essay to deepen their understanding of the politics of representation in Abya Yala/Latin American cinema, and explore the region’s ongoing struggle for Indigenous rights and self-determination. This course satisfies the Area 2 requirement for the Spanish major. Prerequisite(s): SPAN 307 or consent of the instructor.
