Macalester-Sponsored Scholarships

  • Ella Bandes Scholarship

    Summary:

    IAU College, with study abroad programs in Aix-en-Province, France, is proud to offer the Ella Bandes Scholarship Program for qualified Macalester students interested in either a semester or summer abroad in the Core Arts Program at IAU College鈥檚 Marchutz School of Art.

    The scholarship was created in memory of Ella Bandes, a former Macalester and IAU Marchutz School of Art student. 聽

    Each year, qualified Macalester students enrolled full-time in the IAU Marchutz Plein Air Painting program can apply for one of two individual semester scholarships or one summer scholarship.

    This scholarship is administrated by Macalester鈥檚 Art and Art History department.

    Award Amount:
    $5,000/semester
    $3,000/summer

    鈥揂cceptance into the IAU Marchutz program
    鈥揇emonstrated financial need

  • Jack C. and Dorothy DeSimone Pitts Endowment for Study Abroad

    Summary:
    In honor of Jack C. and Dorothy D. Pitts, Janet Pitts Beckman, in collaboration with Macalester, has established the Jack C. and Dorothy DeSimone Pitts Endowment for Study Abroad to support qualified Macalester students.

    This scholarship is intended to support undergraduate study abroad in the social sciences and humanities. Funds can be used to聽cover聽any costs directly incurred from participation in the semester of study away, including but not limited to: room, board, tuition, travel, visa, books.

    The scholarship is administered through the Center for Study Away in collaboration with the Financial Aid Office and the program sponsor.

    Award Amount:
    $500-$3,000, depending on funds available and number of applicants

    Eligibility:
    鈥揝tudents must be enrolled in a Macalester approved study away semester program that offers聽direct enrollment in a foreign university 飞丑别谤别听content courses are not taught in English聽(students will need the relevant foreign language proficiency) AND students must take at least one of those content courses not taught in English offered through direct enrollment at a foreign university.

    鈥揅ontent courses cannot be language-learning courses; they must be in a subject other than language.

    Examples:聽Mac German Program 鈥 taking European Society course in German at the University of Vienna; IES Madrid 鈥 taking Political & Social History of Spain & Spanish America in Spanish at Universidad Complutense de Madrid

  • Kay Thomas Fund Scholarship

    Summary:
    Established by Kay A. Thomas, 鈥63, the Thomas IGC Fund supports the Institute for Global Citizenship and may be used to strengthen and expand existing programs and explore new initiatives that align with the mission and scope of the IGC.

    This scholarship is currently offered in support of聽students who wish to pursue international academic activities聽during the summer, whether via study away programs, internships, language study, research, etc.

    Award Amount:
    Award amounts are determined based on financial need and estimated expenses. Awards may not cover the cost of all anticipated expenses incurred while abroad, but may act as a considerable financial offset.

    Eligibility:
    鈥揚articipation in an international intellectual pursuit during the summer
    鈥揚riority is given to students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to study abroad during their enrollment at Macalester
    鈥揝tudents graduating in May are聽not聽eligible to apply for the summer following their graduation.
    鈥揇emonstrated financial need

    Description聽of the international academic activity (program, language school, internship, research focus, etc.), including location and dates of travel
    鈥揙verall expected聽expenses, and specifically those for which you are applying for funding
    Short essay聽detailing the intended experience, what you hope to gain from it, how it will contribute to accomplishing personal, academic and/or professional goals, and how this scholarship will help you achieve those goals.
    鈥揧ou will also be asked to describe if/how your summer pursuit may be your best (or only) undergraduate international academic opportunity.

    鈥揟he application will open in February and be due in March for summer 2026 opportunities.

  • Study Away Work Study (SAWS) Award

    Summary:
    Studying away can be transformational and life-changing. Because of their own global learning experiences, alums Margo Holen Dinneen ’65 (SWAP, Hong Kong, the U.S. Ambassadors for Friendship) and Dr. Todd Lee ’87 (American University in Cairo) have provided a generous contribution to help others in the Macalester community access and benefit from similar opportunties.

    Award Amount:
    Award amounts will be determined based on financial need and work study awards. Aid statuses and current awards will be confirmed by the Financial Aid Office. Funds will not cover the cost of all anticipated expenses incurred while away, but may act as a financial offset.

    Eligibility:
    鈥揚articipation in a Macalester-approved, semester-long study away program
    鈥揚riority is given to students studying outside of Western Europe.
    鈥揝tudents are not eligible if they are already receiving a Pitts Scholarship (applicants will be notified by April 30 of each year).
    鈥揇emonstrated financial need

    Summary:
    American Councils strengthens international ties and mutual understanding through excellence in academic, professional and cultural exchange, language acquisition, educational development, and research. They aim to empower individuals and institutions to address challenges in a diverse and interconnected world.

    Summary:
    AUC offers financial assistance to study abroad students, who are visiting AUC from their home institutions, as well as international non-degree students who enroll in AUC courses but are not currently pursuing a degree.

    AMIDEAST Education Abroad Programs in the MENA is committed to providing financial assistance to students enrolled in our programs. Awards will be made only to students who submit a completed scholarship application and a complete program application by the established deadlines.     Summary:
    CET awards a variety of each year and supports the Fund for Education Abroad to lessen financial need as a barrier to study abroad. Most CET scholarship decisions are based on financial need, and scholarship awards are intended to encourage study abroad by helping to alleviate financial burden.

    Summary:
    CIEE has made it their mission to help every student who wants to study abroad have access to this life-changing experience.     Summary:
    As a non-profit study abroad institution, CYA aims to help as many students as possible to find options for financial assistance. Eligibility for their scholarships is based on financial need. Only students who have been accepted to CYA for a semester or academic year are eligible to apply.

    Summary:
    The Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (ICCS) was established in 1965 and provides undergraduate students with an opportunity in Rome to study ancient history, archaeology, Greek and Latin literature, Italian language, and ancient art.

    Summary:
    IAU is committed to making studying abroad a reality for students who otherwise may not have the opportunity. Through a robust offering of merit scholarships, grants, and need-based assistance for its semester, summer, and J-Term students, IAU is a leader in the industry when it comes to breaking down the cost barrier.

    To be eligible for IAU scholarship and grant opportunities, students must be full-time, in IAU-arranged housing, abide by all IAU policies and regulations as stated on the policies page, and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA while attending IAU.

    Summary:
    IES Abroad commits $5 million in study abroad scholarships and financial aid. All students must be approved for an IES Abroad program to receive these awards. You will be considered for all funding when you submit an aid application, with the exception of the Disability Grant, which requires a separate application.

    Summary:
    The Cason Scholarship Award is in memory of Jeffrey W. Cason who served as Dean of International Programs at Middlebury College for nine years. This scholarship is in recognition of his lifelong passion for international teaching, learning, and study abroad. A limited number of students from colleges and universities other than Middlebury will be granted scholarships of $4,000 every semester.

  • AATG – American Association of Teachers of German

    Summary:
    The AATG Study Abroad Scholarship for College Students supports full-time undergraduate students on their study abroad journey. This program is supported by donations to the AATG.

    Up $1,250/semester

  • Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship

    Summary:
    The U.S. Department of State鈥檚 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (Gilman Progr补尘)听provides up to $5,000 in merit-based scholarships to outstanding American undergraduate students聽with high financial need聽to pursue credit-bearing academic studies and career-oriented internships abroad. These opportunities equip Gilman Scholars with international experience, global networks, and foreign language skills essential to聽advancing聽the聽U.S. economic competitiveness and聽national security.

    Award Amount:
    Up to $5,000/semester
    An additional $3,000 with critical need language qualification
    An additional $1,000 with STEM supplement

  • Boren Awards

    Summary:
    Boren Awards are scholarships and fellowships for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students committed to long-term overseas study and to public service. Boren awardees receive funding to study the languages most critical to our nation’s security in the regions below:

    • Africa
    • Asia
    • Central and Eastern Europe
    • Eurasia
    • Latin America
    • Middle East

    Preference will be given to Boren Awards applicants proposing overseas programs of at least 25 weeks鈥 duration. The minimum duration of an eligible program is 12 weeks for most Boren Awards applicants.

    8-11 weeks: $8,000 for a summer program (STEM majors only)
    12-24 weeks: $12,500
    25-52 weeks: $25,000

    Summary:

  • Center for Khmer Students: Junior Residents Fellow Program

    Summary:
    The Center for Khmer Studies offers a six-week junior fellowship program in Cambodia for U.S., Cambodian, and French students. The program is only open to students with U.S., French, or Cambodian citizenship. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn about contemporary Cambodian history in the classroom, as well as engage in field trips to historical and cultural sites.

    Award Amount:
    CKS covers the cost of tuition, accommodation (bed and breakfast), local transportation during program activities, books, study materials, and some field trip expenses, such as entrance fees to historical and cultural sites. All other costs are incurred by Fellows.

    Summary:
    The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation is dedicated to preserving the memory of Corinne Schillings by providing a living legacy through education, specifically supporting undergraduate college women in the study of languages and learning about other cultures.

    Award Amount:
    $1,000/semester

    Basic Eligibility:
    鈥揢.S. citizen or permanent resident
    鈥揗ust have received Silver or Gold Award in Girl Scouts and provide proof
    鈥揅umulative grade point is at least a B

  • Critical Language Scholarship

    Summary:
    The CLS Program provides immersive summer programs for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to learn languages of strategic importance to the United States鈥 national security and economic prosperity. Participants receive the equivalent of one year of language study in eight weeks, through intensive language instruction and cultural activities that reinforce both language learning and intercultural competence. The Critical Language Scholarship Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and is supported in its implementation by American Councils for International Education.

    Award Amount:
    CLS covers language instruction and cultural programming, books and materials, international and domestic travel, visa fees (where applicable), room, board, and program-sponsored travel.

  • Diverse International Women of Color Study Abroad Scholarship

    Summary:
    The Diverse International Women Of Color (DIWC) Study Abroad Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad.

    $500/term

    鈥揃e a women of color but not limited to Black or African-American, Native American, Hispanic/Latina, and Asian.

  • Freeman Asia Program

    Summary:
    The Freeman-ASIA program is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The program鈥檚 goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

    Award Amount:
    Up to $5,000/semester

    Summary:
    The Fulbright U.S. Student Program expands perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. Fulbright creates connections in a complex and changing world. In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.

    This opportunity is facilitated by Academic Programs and Advising at Macalester.

    Summary:
    The Bridging Scholarshipis a life-changing opportunity to study abroad in Japan in a credit-bearing semester or academic-year program. Participants can explore the culture, heritage, and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university.

    The Institute covers roundtrip airfare, accommodation, tuition and fees, and possibly some meals.
