This summer, my mission was to bring positive change through youth mentorship that goes beyond accessing basic necessities, but rather plants seeds of hope.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AICS is a non-profit founded for and by the African immigrant community residing in the Twin Cities Metro Area. The AICS family builds and expands strong relationships with community based agencies, such as communities of faith and government entities. AICS also provides services ranging from assistance in filing for or accessing MNsure, permanent housing, formal education, paid employment, case management, English language courses and youth development.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My role was to assist the youth program coordinators in their job readiness program, through a grant AICS received for East African youth aged 18-24. I was captivated by their energy. The program helped participants gain certification and technical skills to enter the Tech industry. What I loved about this summer was this: the participants spoke to me as a community member, a sister.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As an outsider here, I am mindful about the spaces I enter. I am hesitant to join movements where I don\u2019t belong, but I have always felt connected to the East African community in Minneapolis. I was always involved in and learned from youth mentorship. This is why my project focused on a long term vision: giving individuals the resources, motivation and tools for personal growth, to become competitive professionals in the Tech field. I believe this can later translate into community development.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Truthfully, I am honored to have worked closely with such kind and caring students to support them in their professional journey. I am a firm believer in the power of people\u2019s stories and experiences. Hearing from people and creating a space where their ideas can become a reality is something that has immeasurable impacts on individuals and communities as a whole.
