This is a great option if you want a bit more flexibility than living on campus or if you don\u2019t want to be on a meal plan. To find a room to sublet, try talking to your junior and senior friends or joining the\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/236599406446099\/\">Macalester Housing Facebook<\/a>\u00a0page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>On campus<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>(The following information is subject to change. If you are planning on working this summer and do not have an SSN, make sure to apply early so that you have it by the time you need to start work! The number can take 1-3 weeks to arrive after you apply.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to work on campus over the summer and you already work on campus during the academic year\u2013this includes doing research with a Macalester professor\u2013you do not need to get additional work certification.<\/p>\n<p>If you are doing an internship off-campus, you need to register for\u00a0<a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/isp\/governmentregulations\/employmentasastudent\/\">CPT<\/a>\u00a0(Curricular Practical Training). Inquire at your current job or keep an eye on the\u00a0<a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/macalester.studentemployment.ngwebsolutions.com\/JobX_FindAJob.aspx\">student employment job portal<\/a>\u00a0for summer opportunities. Working on campus is an easy and stress-free way to spend the summer at Macalester, since you need no additional work permission if you already work on campus during the academic year.<\/p>\n<h3>Do research<\/h3>\n<p>Doing research with a Mac professor is a great summer work option. If you are interested in doing research, we recommend talking to professors who work in your field of interest and also keeping an eye on job postings that may get sent out by departments.<\/p>\n<p>If you do research with a Mac professor, you do not need to get CPT but you will need to get a Social Security Number if you do not already have one.<\/p>\n<h3>Do an internship\/Get a Summer Job<\/h3>\n<p>There are many great organizations in the Twin Cities and elsewhere where you could intern or work for the summer. The\u00a0<a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/career-exploration\/\">Career Exploration Center<\/a>\u00a0is a great resource for finding internships and completing the necessary paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Students doing paid or unpaid internships must register their internship through Career Exploration.<strong> ISP needs to authorize your internship for <a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/isp\/governmentregulations\/employmentasastudent\/\">CPT<\/a> BEFORE you can start working.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Apply for a Project Grant<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/igc\/\">Institute for Global Citizenship<\/a>\u00a0offers funds for students to conduct their own social entrepreneurship projects through several different grants:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/entrepreneurship-and-innovation\/live-it-fund\/\">Live it Fund<\/a>\u00a0can give you between $250 and $2,000 to live out your definition of global citizenship. The application deadline for Summer 2023 has already passed.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/igc\/socialentrepreneurship\/davisprojectsforpeace\/\">Davis Projects for Peace<\/a>\u00a0is an initiative to design grassroots projects backed with $10,000. The application deadline for Summer 2023 has already passed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Take a class<\/h3>\n<p>Over the summer you can participate in several types of academic opportunities. Through Macalester you can do an independent project or participate in the summer Physics Institute. You could also take classes at other colleges and universities and get them approved for Macalester credit. module<\/strong> in the &#8220;My Housing and Dining&#8221; section. The <a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/career-exploration\/\">Career Exploration Center<\/a>\u00a0is a great resource for finding internships and completing the necessary paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Students doing paid or unpaid internships must register their internship through Career Exploration.<strong> ISP needs to authorize your internship for <a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/isp\/governmentregulations\/employmentasastudent\/\">CPT<\/a> BEFORE you can start working.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Volunteer<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/cec\/\">Community Engagement Center (CEC)<\/a>\u00a0can connect you with a number of volunteer opportunities in the Twin Cities in\u00a0January. Whether you are interested in environmental justice, immigrant and refugee work, or tutoring kids, there is something for you!\u00a0Check out their\u00a0website or drop-by the 3rd floor of Markim Hall. <strong>Come speak with ISP before you start volunteering, as some opportunities must be authorized first.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Invest in your career<\/h3>\n<p>This is a great time to do those career-building things you are too busy to do during the semester.
