The goal of individual counseling is to talk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> through mental health concerns and help students heal, grow, and move toward more satisfying and meaningful lives. It is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an opportunity to explore feelings, thoughts, behaviors, beliefs and build self-awareness, to receive support and guidance, to consider solutions to life\u2019s challenges, and to set personal goals to work toward change. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You will work with a trained mental health counselor in a caring and confidential environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note: Many concerns resolve or improve with short-term therapy while other more complex or on-going concerns may require off campus, specialized, or long-term counseling.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At your initial meeting, you will meet with your counselor for 45 minutes to discuss your current concerns and relevant history. Together, you will come up with next steps for your care based on your needs and available resources (i.e. short-term individual counseling, group counseling, off campus support, other recommendations, or you may decide no further care is needed). If the next step is short-term individual therapy at the Hamre Center, a follow-up meeting will be scheduled (usually in 2 &#8211; 3 weeks). These appointments are reserved for students that are in distress, seeking immediate care within 1 &#8211; 2 days, and are unable to wait to schedule an individual counseling appointment. The goal of these appointments is to focus on the immediate needs that are bringing someone in. A counselor will offer support, help problem solve, identify additional resources, and help brainstorm next steps. The intention of counseling groups is to help students address mental health concerns, connect with others, and learn new tools and skills with the guidance of 1 &#8211; 2 licensed counselors. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The groups may focus on a particular theme or concern or may be tailored to a specific group of individuals. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Groups range from unstructured to structured, typically last 4 &#8211; 8 weeks, and have between 5-10 members. The care coordinator will talk with you about what you are looking for to determine the most appropriate type of care. The care coordinator can help you find and connect with an off campus mental health counselor, a psychiatrist, ADHD testing, eating disorder treatment, substance use disorder treatment, outpatient and inpatient mental health programs, and more. According to the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, the average wait time for counseling in the community is six weeks. At the Hamre Center, students can typically schedule a first appointment within 1 &#8211; 2 weeks and up to 3 weeks during busier times of the year like the beginning of the semester, midterms, and finals. Length of time between a submitted request and a scheduled appointment depends on many factors: student flexibility with their schedule, specificity of counselor preferences <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(i.e. gender identity, racial\/ethnic identity, etc\u2026)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the availability within the counselors\u2019 schedule, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We compiled a short list of tips to scheduling to assist with this process. Sleep, eating, and movement are vital to your overall mental health. Sticking to a sleep schedule can help you improve your sleep quality. Choose fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and other foods with less processing. Keep yourself hydrated with water, as this serves your whole system well. Make movement a part of your daily routine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seek community support. Who else can be a supportive person or a community support to you? Consider reaching out to a friend, parent, mentor, your RA, identity collectives, or other clubs and campus organizations. Or campus resources such as the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, the Center for Disability Resources, and the Max Center.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Write down your thoughts and feelings in a journal. It&#8217;s been shown to help people manage stress, reduce anxiety, and cope with depression. If you don&#8217;t have much to write about, try making a list of three to five things you feel grateful for.
