Karl R. Wirth
Emeritus Faculty
Mineralogy/Petrology/Planetary Geology
I currently co-direct the Keck Geology Consortium REU, co-investigate coral reefs in Belize, and explore ways AI can support teaching and learning. Earlier in my career, I used geochemistry to study the origins and evolution of continental and oceanic crust, with field sites ranging from the Bering Sea region to Tanzania. I regularly taught Mineralogy, Petrology, and Geochemistry, along with introductory courses including Exploring the Solar System and Dynamic Earth and Global Change. Later in my career, an increasing interest in teaching and learning led me to research and support faculty development in metacognition, motivation, self-assessment, and mentoring.
