This is a friendly reminder about their\/our roles!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Types of Animals at Mac and Human Responsibilities:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pets:&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A privately owned animal for \u201cordinary use\u201d and\/or companionship; not a Service or support animal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please <strong>do not bring<\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><strong>pets inside Macalester buildings or facilities\u2013<\/strong>animals are allowed outside in non-restricted areas.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Service Animals:&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Service animals are trained dogs (sometimes miniature horses)<em> <\/em>as per the Americans with Disabilities Act that perform specific tasks for an individual to mitigate disability impacts. <strong>A person\/handler\u2019s disability may not be readily apparent.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Service animals may or may not wear vests or have identification, but often are wearing vests to indicate they are working.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Service animals are allowed access to <em>all <\/em>general campus spaces the Macalester community is allowed with their person\/handler. They do not need prior permission from the Center for Disability Resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speak to the person\/handler, not the animal.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Campus officials can ask <strong>two questions<\/strong> if the role of a Service Animal is not readily apparent:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIs the animal required because of a disability?\u201d and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat work or task has the animal been trained to perform?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Please do not ask to pet, handle, photograph or otherwise engage with Service Animals.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Individuals with a conflicting disability in an areas where Service Animals are present should contact Center for Disability Resources (allergies,etc).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Emotional Support Animals (ESA) :&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emotional Support animals are part of an individual\u2019s <em>ongoing therapeutic support needs<\/em> as per the Fair Housing Act.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional Support animals can be a variety of animal types, they do not have to be a specific animal\/breed, but some limitations may apply.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional Support animals are <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong><strong> generally allowed in non-approved buildings\/facilities<\/strong> as they are not specifically trained to navigate these environments.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a process for ESA\u2019s in Residential Life via the Center for Disability Resources to ensure space considerations.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional Support animals must be pre-approved via Disability Resources processes or Human Resources to access community spaces where animals are generally not allowed (Residence Halls, any indoor area as noted under \u201cPets\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional Support animals are an accommodation for a Mac Community member; ask the person\/handler prior to engaging with a known support animal.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Person\/handlers are responsible for the appropriate behavior of animals.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trained Therapy Animals:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Therapy animals are trained and provide care as managed by individuals\/agencies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therapy animals are allowed for college-sponsored therapeutic programming spaces .&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engagement with Therapy Animals is both encouraged and <\/strong><strong><em>publicized&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therapy animal behavior is the responsibility of their person\/handler.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All animals are allowed access to Macalester outdoor grounds if they are leashed and under the control of their person\/handler in areas not otherwise restricted. M<strong>anagement and control of all animals are the responsibility of the person\/handler regardless of the animal \u201ctype\u201d.&nbsp; <\/strong>Aggressive, unattended or disruptive behavior of any animal should be reported to Public Safety as soon as possible to address concerns quickly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there are questions or concerns about the role of assistance animals, please contact the Center for Disability Resources.
