9\/19\/2022 Playing Dionysus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<https:\/\/www.out-of-chaos.co.uk\/playingdionysus<\/a>>, the second iteration of our student theatrical competition organized by Out of Chaos Theatre and supported by the Society for Classical Studies and the Center for Hellenic Studies. The contest is open to high school and college students in the US and Canada (there will be separate competitions in assorted other countries) and there is a $400 prize for first place, and two $200 prizes for second place.  We\u2019re using Aaron Poochigian\u2019s fabulous translation of Euripides\u2019 Bacchae, the same version that was used by SITI Company for their Getty Villa and Brooklyn Academy of Music performances. Students can choose from a selection of scenes, all of which are available here<https:\/\/www.out-of-chaos.co.uk\/playingdionysus<\/a>>. Record a scene from the Bacchae and submit it by October 31st, 2022<\/strong>. Winners will be announced during Reading Greek Tragedy Online<https:\/\/sententiaeantiquae.com\/reading-greek-tragedy-online\/<\/a>> in December 2022. The winners will receive $400, with two second place prizes of $200 each. Entries welcomed entirely recorded on zoom, or recordings of groups who are able to share the same space. University or high school groups can enter multiple times, but each actor can appear in only one submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9\/19\/2022 Philomathes: An Online Journal of Undergraduate Research in Classics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Classics program at Austin Peay State University is pleased to invite submissions for the seventh volume of Philomathes: An Online Journal of Undergraduate Research in Classics<\/i>.  This refereed on-line journal publishes original research projects carried out by undergraduate students in any area of Classics.  Submissions are welcome from current undergraduates and those who have recently completed their undergraduate education (within one year of graduation).  The deadline for submissions for the next issue is Tuesday, November 15, 2022<\/b> with an online publication date scheduled for May 2023. Please see the web site, for information on publication policies and submission guidelines, as well as previous issues of the journal. https:\/\/www.apsu.edu\/philomathes\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Paideia Dolphin Editions aim to teach Latin through Latin and Greek through Greek, and to make the original texts accessible by paraphrasing them into simple Latin (or Greek) prose and by providing the reader with a substantial body of explanatory notes. Book 1 of Homer’s Iliad and selections from Vergil’s Aeneid are available on

Applications for the National Humanities Leadership Council 2022-23  are now open.<\/a> Council members take part in a unique series of discussion sessions with thought leaders which explore the essential importance of humanistic perspectives in addressing the concerns of contemporary society. Students will have the opportunity to pursue specific individual or collective humanities projects and will network with professionals who represent a range of fields including academia, nonprofit work, the arts, science communication, museum studies and curation, and activism and advocacy. Applicants are NOT required to have declared concentrations or majors in humanities fields. <\/strong>The Institute of Reading Development is accepting applications for online summer teaching positions for the live online reading skills programs for students of all ages. The programs provide students with the skills, books, and experiences they need to achieve greater success in school and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(L) 03\/29\/2021 Latin Intensive Opportunities at Rutgers University
<\/strong>The Rutger’s Department of Classics is excited to announce a new intensive summer Latin opportunity. The course will be an eight-week intensive for eight credits, covering all of first-year Latin. No prior knowledge of Latin is expected. The intensive course will be team-taught, under the aegis of Professor Jeffrey Ulrich, with 4.5 hours of online instruction Mon-Fri. All students who register before the deadline will have access to the scholarship rate with additional funding sources available for students from historically underrepresented groups in Classics. (G) 03\/20\/2021 Online Graduate certificate in digital public humanities
<\/strong>The Department of History and Art History at George Mason University, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, has created a fully online
Graduate Certificate in Digital Public Humanities<\/a>.  The program trains students in the digital skills and tools that are increasingly essential to careers in education, public history, libraries, publishing and many kinds of government and non-profit work.   This 15-credit program consists of three online courses followed by a remote internship with a unit of the Smithsonian Institution. (E) 03\/11\/2021 Iowa\u2019s Homerathon 2021
<\/strong> The University of Iowa\u2019s Department of Classics hosts invites you to their \u201cHomerathon\u201d where students, staff, faculty, and Iowa City locals gather for a public performance of either the Iliad <\/i>or the Odyssey<\/i>. Last year, 130 people came together to virtually record themselves reading an assigned selection from the
Odyssey<\/a>. <\/i>This year, they are seeking volunteers to record themselves reading an assigned selection from the Iliad. <\/i>Interested participants can register on their website<\/a>. Recordings will be due by April 16<\/b> and the final compilation of all the recordings will be released to the public on April 30<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(J): 03\/11\/2021 ASCSA Position Opening: Assistant Editor, Hesperia
<\/strong> The Publications Office of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens has a full-time vacancy, beginning in July for a well-organized and highly motivated individual to support the Editor of Hesperia, a journal on Greek archaeology and material culture. A bachelor\u2019s degree, preferably in Archaeology, Classics, or a related field, and at least two years of experience as a production, manuscript, or project editor is required. <\/strong>The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is seeking a Digital Humanities Project Assistant to prepare the public release of a program that was originally developed at the excavations of the Athenian Agora for annotating the field notebooks. he position is full-time temporary, ending August 31, 2021, with the possibility for continuation. Working remotely is possible but working locally at the School in Greece is preferred. Classics alumna Charlotte Houghton ’20 shared with us “a new project folks might be interested in.” She has been “working with Center for Hellenic Studies and Open Greek and Latin Project for the past several months, and helped to plan and develop this initiative.” Participants will help the
First Thousand Years of Greek Project<\/a> reach its goal. There are approximately 8 million words of Greek remaining to be digitized, a large but achievable task given that nearly 70 million words are already digitized and available on the Scaife Viewer<\/a>.  Charlotte says it\u2019s a really fun project to work on, and is a great exposure to digital humanities and a wide variety of Greek texts, and anyone with questions can email her at houghton at chs.harvard.edu. <\/strong>W.D.E. Coulson and Toni M. Cross Aegean Exchange Program for Greek Ph.D. level graduate students and senior scholars in any field of the humanities and social sciences from prehistoric to modern times to conduct research in Turkey, under the auspices of the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) in Ankara and\/or Istanbul during the academic year. Applicants must be a Greek national and the deadline to apply is March 15th, 2021. <\/strong>A stipend is provided and the program lasts between two weeks to two months. (L) 2\/25\/2019 Panel on Iran Past and Present: A Literary and Artistic Continuum of Persia and Iran
<\/strong>This panel, featuring Professor Ahoo Najafian, Ira T. Wender Postdoctoral Scholar in Middle East Studies at Carleton College, and Professor Wessam Elmeligi, Arabic Professor and Assistant Professor of the Classical Mediterranean and Middle East, will explore the continuity of Persian literature and art into modern Iranian culture and life. The first part of this talk examines 20th-century self-understandings in Iran and the ways that the Iranian soul is connected to poetic and mystical traditions, epitomized in the figure of Hafez. The second part of the talk explores the Persian legend of Shirin and Khosrow through analysis of three textual and visual interpretations: Nizami Ganjavi\u2019s poem Khamsa, Ferdowsi\u2019s miniature paintings, and Abbas Kiarostami\u2019s film, Shirin. The West Side Farmers Market (WSFM), is a seasonal, weekly neighborhood farmers market primarily serving the West Side of St. Paul. WSFM has become a much-needed summertime gathering spot for the neighborhood. Past customer surveys show that customers choose the West Side Farmers Market for many reasons but primarily for connecting to community and  access to healthy affordable food in a relaxed and convenient environment.  WSFM is looking for an intern who is interested in local food production, marketing and distribution and in learning more about the lived experience of the vendors at the WSFM. The intent is to share these findings through the development of  dynamic multimedia vendor \u201cprofiles\u201d. These vendor \u201cprofiles\u201d will be shared with the broader community to honor and showcase the contribution of WSFM vendors to the local community and economy. <\/span>The intern will be responsible for interviewing approximately 10 vendors, some of whom have limited English skills (WSFM will work with the intern to provide interpretation or translation services as necessary).  Onsite visits to vendors\u2019 farms or gardens will be encouraged. Data collection can include written documentation, audio and video recordings, photos, and other artifacts. Final products will go on the WSFM website, be shared at community events and help to tell the story of our neighborhood farmers market with funders and other community partners. APTLII is an intensive residential summer language immersion program for undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals. Students commit to using their target language as their only means of communication for the entire summer. McCarthy gained international recognition as head of EPA leading historic progress to achieve the administration\u2019s public health and environmental protection goals and Climate Action Plan. The Minnesota Historical Society is recruiting for a fellowship opportunity with their Department of Inclusion and Community Engagement (INCE). The INCE Fellowship Program (formerly known as the ACTC Fellowship) is a course that encourages undergraduates from diverse communities to explore the challenges within museums, historical organizations, and cultural institutions related to inclusion, representation, narrative, and the workforce.

Since graduating from Macalester, Kulkarni has been working as a reporter and producer on a host of different podcasts including The Ringer’s Slate, Gimlet’s Undone, Mogul: The Life and Death of Chris Lighty, and The Nod, and WNYC’s On The Media. She is also a freelance contributor for NPR’s Marketplace. This talk will be geared towards those with an interest in journalism\/roles in media. She will discuss her journey into the industry and her work in new media startups, radio, and podcasting. She’ll let you know how her degree and graduate school helped her and suggestions she has for what she would have done differently. <\/strong>Study Classics after Mac at the University of Iowa. The graduate program in Classics is intended for undergraduates who have taken coursework in Greek and Latin and have successfully completed at least three years of one language and two of the other and who wish to continue study for an M.A. or Ph.D.  The M.A. is conceived as a two-year program and the Ph.D. as a six-year program (four years in coursework and two for writing the dissertation).  The department offers Teaching Assistantships, Assistantships for the departmental journal Syllecta Classica<\/em>, and fellowships in years five and six.  The Post-Baccalaureate degree is a one- or two-year program for undergraduates who require more training in Latin and\/or Greek.  Students take language and culture courses in the department before applying for admission to graduate programs. To learn more about the programs, see the

<\/strong>The international undergraduate philosophy journal at Cornell University, Logos, is now accepting submissions for its Spring 2018 publication. Papers will be evaluated for publication on the basis of a blind peer review, and cash prizes in the sums of $300, $150, and $50 <\/span>will be awarded to the authors of the first, second, and third place papers respectively.  Submissions are due January 1, 2018.  For more information about the journal and submission guidelines, see the

(A) 11\/13\/2017 ASCSA Summer Session
The Summer Session program of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens is a six-week session designed for those who wish to become acquainted with Greece and its major monuments, and to improve their understanding of the country\u2019s landscape, history, literature, and culture from antiquity to the present. The ASCSA Summer Session has provided the most extensive exposure to Greece, ancient and modern, for generations of students of Classics and related fields. It has a strong academic component with participants researching and presenting topics on site and offers unique opportunities to interact with archaeologists in the field. Roughly half of the session is spent in travel throughout Greece. Three trips of varying duration give the participant an introduction to the major archaeological sites and museum collections in North and Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Crete. The remainder of the session is devoted to study of the museums and monuments of Athens and the surrounding area with day trips to such sites as Marathon, Sounion, and Eleusis. The Summer Session’s commitment to presenting a comprehensive view of Greece’s rich history leads to long days and extensive walking in the hot Mediterranean climate. <\/strong>The Paideia Institute is proud to announce its sixth annual Living Latin in NYC conference, a two-day Living Latin and Greek experience in the heart of Manhattan February 17-18, 2018, hosted jointly with the Fordham University Department of Classics. This conference, one of the largest active Latin gatherings in the world, is designed to allow teachers and students of Classics to explore and practice the active use of Latin and Greek. In the setting of Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus, the program includes lectures on various aspects of active Latin and Greek pedagogy and workshops in which participants practice and observe spoken Latin and Greek techniques themselves. The registration fee for the program is $125<\/em>. This fee includes all materials as well as breakfast and coffee hour daily.
