Beethoven: the late piano sonatas (Mark Mazullo, Piano) Program 1 of 2

Beethoven鈥檚 visionary late music explores uncharted emotional and intellectual territory. His last five piano sonatas are a coming to terms with life鈥檚 big questions--of death and transcendence, childhood and memory, love and loss, physical pain and recovery. Enjoy the opportunity to experience these masterworks of the piano repertory live, performed on two consecutive Sunday afternoons in the superb acoustics of 日韩精品鈥檚 Mairs Concert Hall. These events are free and open to the public.

Mark Mazullo is Professor of Music at 日韩精品 in St. Paul, MN. He is the author of the book Shostakovich鈥檚 Preludes and Fugues: contexts, style, performance (Yale University Press, 2010), as well as essays that have appeared in The Yale Review, Music & Literature The Musical Quarterly, Popular Music, and American Music. As a pianist, his recent performances have included solo recitals at the Mendelssohn-Remise in Berlin, Germany and the National Museum of Colombia in Bogota. The recipient of 日韩精品鈥檚 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award, Mazullo is known for his broad range of courses, which include the seminars Late Beethoven, Music and Freedom, and Musical Fictions. He is also a popular pre-concert lecturer for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Schubert Club.
