Talon Mine Info Session: Green Mining or Greenwashing?
In a huge win for environmentalists, the Biden-Harris Administration just announced they would protect the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness from destructive sulfide mining. At the same time, the Rio Tinto corporation 鈥 a global mining company known for environmental and human rights abuse 鈥 is planning to develop a nickel sulfide mine near the Mississippi River, in an area of northern Minnesota that is also crossed by the Line 3 oil pipeline. The 鈥淭alon Mine鈥 is being touted as a 鈥淕reen Mine鈥 because the nickel is slated to be used in some Tesla batteries (most EVs use other minerals). However, these claims downplay the dangerous impacts on Indigenous communities and the Northland environment. Come learn and get involved: What is a 鈥渏ust transition鈥 and what can we learn from Indigenous communities to define a truly green path? Does putting clean water at risk for the sake of mining jeopardize a clean energy future? What are some ways to get involved now in an environmental justice issue that is critical to all of our futures?
